Lucia
Lucía is from Spain. Before coming to Sweden, she completed her bachelor's in Mathematical Engineering at Universidad Complutense de Madrid. She is currently enrolled in the master in Applied and Computational Mathematics programme at KTH in the track of Optimisation and System Theory. Outside of mathematics, she is a sports enthusiast. Her favourite sports are swimming and running. She also believes that life is better with a good book.

Why did you choose this master's programme at KTH?
After finishing my bachelor's degree, I was unsure about what I wanted to do. The only thing I was sure about was that I wanted to continue studying mathematics, especially optimisation. After looking at several master's programs, I finally found the one at KTH, which, apart from being a very complete master's programme in applied mathematics, was going to allow me to continue learning about mathematical optimisation. After my first year of master's studies, I can say that it was even more than I was expecting.
What are some of your favourite courses so far?
So far, my favourite course has been Applied Linear Optimisation. It has been a great continuation of my optimisation studies from my bachelor's degree. At the same time, it has allowed me to apply what we have been studying to real-life projects that you would never think require mathematical support. Additionally, Jan Kronqvist, the professor of this course, is a true enthusiast of these topics, which makes it easier to follow the course.
How do studies at KTH differ from your previous studies?
The Spanish and Swedish educational systems are very different, and both have their advantages. However, what I like most about studying at KTH is the emphasis on collaboration. Each course allows you to work with other students, which is a fantastic learning opportunity. By discussing projects, methodologies, and results, you can gain valuable insights that you would never learn if you only studied theory on your own.
What do you want to do after graduating?
I'm not 100% sure, but I see myself doing a PhD right now, probably here at KTH. The university offers plenty of opportunities, and I want to research in depth the different applications of the topics I have been studying so far. I would like to see if I can combine mathematics with other scientific disciplines. And who knows, maybe after the PhD, I will become a professor.
What would you like to say to students thinking of choosing KTH for master's’s studies?
Studying for a master's degree at KTH is only the first step in your career. You will learn about yourself during these two years while expanding your knowledge. Studying here is a unique life experience and an opportunity to learn where your studies can take you. KTH is a trampoline that will provide a solid academic foundation while paving the way for your future.
