Pushkar
Pushkar is from India. He is pursuing a master’s in Engineering Design. He got his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Birla Institute of Technology and Sciences, in Pilani, India. Apart from a passion for design, he likes to read, cycle and hike.

Why did you choose this master’s programme at KTH?
I’ve always enjoyed designing and building things. As a kid, I loved playing with LEGO, and that early curiosity gradually grew into a strong passion for design. This led me to pursue a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, where I had
the chance to work on exciting projects like building cars and rockets. I wanted to take my understanding of design to a deeper level, which is why I chose this master’s programme.
What are some of your favourite courses so far?
Robust and Probabilistic Design is one of my favourite courses so far. Robust design deals with accounting for uncertainty in design. In real life, nothing is completely deterministic. Robust design teaches how to accommodate variations in loads and operating conditions for machines. I also learnt how to make models when the system behaviour is unknown. This is important to ensure that a design holds up under real-life operating conditions.
Another course I really enjoyed is Machine Design. It revisits the fundamentals of mechanical engineering while going deeper into the nuances of designing components and systems. It’s both a refresher and an advanced look into how to improve practical designs.
How is student life in Stockholm?
Outside the classroom, student life in Stockholm is fantastic. There is so much to do beyond academics. THS, the student union, organises a wide range of activities throughout the year, starting with the International Reception. I highly recommend participating in it, as it is a great way to meet new people and get introduced to student life at KTH.
Throughout the year, there are plenty of events to enjoy, including hikes, theatre nights, and board game evenings. There truly is something for everyone. One of the highlights is the tentapubs, which are post-exam parties held at Nymble. The atmosphere is energetic, and the parties are a lot of fun.
Stockholm itself is an amazing city in which to live. With reliable public transport, beautiful natural surroundings, and many cosy cafés where you can study or relax, it is easy to feel at home. On top of that, many places offer student discounts, which is a great advantage when living on a student budget.
How would you describe your time at KTH so far?
My time at KTH has been fantastic. KTH has an amazing international community. The courses are interesting, exposing me to new concepts. I really appreciate how project-based the programme is. Instead of just memorising for an exam, you actually apply what you learn. Most of my exams have been five hours long, which might sound intense, but it gives you the time to think deeply and really engage with the problems. Apart from this, KTH also hosts tons of seminars, workshops, and events throughout the year, so there’s always a chance to dive deeper into new topics or build valuable skills.
What would you like to say to students thinking of choosing KTH for master’s studies?
KTH is an amazing place to study. The work-life balance is amazing. You will have loads of opportunities to grow academically, professionally, and personally. The professors are passionate, and the learning environment is engaging and supportive. KTH also has a very strong industry collaboration, providing multiple opportunities to work directly with industry experts. If you're looking for a master's experience that combines academic excellence with practical experience, all within a vibrant international community, KTH is a great choice. It's a place where you can challenge yourself, explore new ideas, and build a strong foundation for your future.
