Kneev got a scholarship to continue his master's studies at KTH

Before moving to Stockholm to continue the joint master's programme in Innovative Sustainable Energy Engineering, Kneev got his bachelor's degree in Green Process Engineering at Western University in Canada.

You were awarded the KTH Joint Programme Scholarship. What has this scholarship meant for you?

This scholarship has enabled me to broaden my horizons. While pursuing my bachelor's and master's degrees, I worked part-time to support myself financially, but now I can put my best foot forward in all I'm passionate about. I have expanded my research portfolio, furthered my reach as a mental health advocate, and developed my connection with nature through exploration and exercise.

What was your academic or professional background before applying for the scholarship?

I completed my bachelor's studies in Green Process Engineering at Western University in Canada. During this time, I also completed a 16-month internship as an integrity and reliability engineer at a multinational oil and gas transmission company. There, I learned that my true passion lies in research. After completing a bachelor's thesis, I continued my studies in the joint master's programme in Innovative Sustainable Energy Engineering at Aalto University in Finland through the Energy Systems track. This past summer, I worked as a research assistant in the Energy Conversion group at Aalto University before moving to Stockholm to finish my dual degree.

Do you have any recommendations for students applying for the Joint Programme Scholarship?

Your mental health comes first. Setting milestones such as an exceptional scholarship is a great motivation; however, it should never come at the expense of your mental and physical well-being. By prioritizing your body and mind through social activities, exercise, and good rest, you ensure that you can consistently give your best. Milestones come and go, but this is the most transformative and exciting part of our lives, and we must experience it right. If you manage your time, get enough sleep, and prioritize your well-being, you are in the best position to succeed.

What are the best aspects of your programme and your school?

The joint master's programme in Innovative Sustainable Energy Engineering presents such a unique opportunity by allowing students to explore two special cultures, academic environments, and geographies. Importantly, it enables this experience while promoting such an essential field. The School of Industrial Engineering and Management perfectly suits such a programme. With elements of entrepreneurship, holistic systems approach, and tangible application of technologies, this programme really has it all.

What would you say to a student applying for your programme?

This programme holds a unique position. As leaders in sustainability, KTH and the partner universities within my programme are paving the way for a promising future. The programme is more than just a means to an end; you will become a part of this mission. Successfully contributing to sustainable progress starts with valuing our beautiful planet and committing to its safe development. Being passionate about a better and brighter future is the essential ingredient for entering and succeeding in this programme and field.
