Christian

Christian comes from Shenyang, China. After graduating with B.Eng Marine Engineering at Wuhan University of Technology, he worked as an assistant project manager in a diesel engine factory for two years. During his work, he found himself more interested in shipbuilding. Therefore, he chose to further his studies in MSc Naval Architecture at KTH. In his spare time, he enjoys watching motorsport events and even dropping himself into karting tracks to get some personal experience!

Ask Christian a question

Why did you choose this master's programme at KTH?

During my work, I gradually discovered my interest in designing a whole maritime system; however, my background did not support me with this knowledge. The course layout of KTH's MSc Naval Architecture builds on my foundation and allows me to delve into this area of study.

In addition, KTH promotes the concept of sustainability, which I had never been exposed to in my previous studies and work, yet it is one of the most critical topics in the world nowadays. And I have also felt the emphasis on sustainability at KTH in the courses and activities throughout the year.

What are the best aspects of your programme?

The number of students in the Naval Architecture programme is usually smaller than other programmes at KTH. You might think this would make studying a bit boring, but believe me, this leads to more benefits. During your studies, you will get to know everyone in the class faster, and people are easier to get close to. Also, a small-scale class means the teacher will pay more attention to you and have more opportunities to interact with them.

What are some of your favourite courses so far?

It has to be a course named Naval Design! Please don't be intimidated by the name; this is not a one-person job but requires the assistance of all the students taking the course. Here you can design and build an actual marine installation from scratch, with different objectives for each academic year. The teachers wouldn't interfere too much with your creativity but instead provide inspiration and help when you hit a bottleneck. Plus, participating in the course means you'll get access to Poolen, a unique studio where you can study and deepen your bond with fellow students!

How is student life in Stockholm?

So far, I'm enjoying my student life here very much! Beautiful and clean city, with just the right amount of people, friendly citizens, a good transport network and various student offers. Student life in Stockholm is something to look forward to! The only downside for me, who comes from a country with great food, is the slightly higher prices and the less diverse food. Still, it's an excellent opportunity to practice your cooking skills.

What would you like to say to students thinking of choosing KTH for master's studies?

If you're still dazzled by the choice of different universities, don't hesitate to come and study at KTH! Here, you can enjoy learning without the stress! Also, of all the European cities I've visited, Stockholm is still my favourite for studying and living! Coming to study at KTH was the best decision I could have made!
