How to apply for doctoral studies

If you want to join KTH as a doctoral student you start by finding a vacant doctoral position that fits your interest and academic background. KTH recruits only the best candidates for doctoral studies, and the selection process is highly competitive.

1. Find a vacant doctoral position

Doctoral positions are announced nine times a year: in February, March, April, May, June, September, October, November and December.

2. Check the admission requirements

You need to meet the general admission requirements   and the specific requirements in the announcement for the position you are applying for.

3. Apply for the position

You apply through the application link on the vacant position announcement.

4. Pass the selection process

All applications are assessed and usually a limited number of applicants are invited for either an in person or on-line interview. Once the position has been offered to a candidate, all applicants are notified.

5. Become admitted as a student 

After passing the selection you are admitted to a doctoral subject  by the KTH school that announced the posision and you will follow a doctoral programme .

6. Receive your employment

After your admission, you will receive your employment at KTH. Non-EU/EEA citizens need to apply for a residence permit to come to Sweden and start their studies.
