How to become a doctoral (PhD) student at KTH
The most common way to become a doctoral student at KTH is to apply for a vacant PhD position. If you are selected, you will be employed by KTH and earn a monthly salary.

Procedure to become an employed doctoral student
1. Look for a vacant doctoral (PhD) position
Doctoral positions are announced nine times a year; in February, March, April, May, June, September, October, November and December. Application deadlines may vary. List of current vacant positions
2. Ensure that you meet the requirements
There are general requirements that all doctoral students have to meet, but in addition, you must meet the specific requirements mentioned in the advertisement describing the particular position you are interested in.
3. Apply for a position
If you find an interesting position and meet the requirements for it, you are welcome to send a digital application via our recruitment system that can be accessed from the advertisement. You will receive an e-mail confirming that we have received your application.
4. Pass the selection process
All applications are screened and evaluated. Both academic and personal qualities can be taken into account. The selection process normally includes interviews with a limited number of candidates, either in person or on-line.
5. Receive an offer and accept a position
Once the responsible academics have selected the most suitable candidate, all applicants will be notified of the result. If you are selected and accept the offer, you will proceed with steps 6 - 8.
6. Admission
The school admits you to a doctoral subject and you will follow a doctoral programme . You are now registered as a doctoral student at KTH.
7. Employment
When the steps above have been completed, you will be employed by KTH . Please note that non-EU/EEA citizens will need a visa/residence permit in order to be employed and reside in Sweden.
8. Create an individual study plan
Together with your supervisor(s), you will write an individual study plan .
