Visiting researcher from Poland

Dr Paweł Dunaj is a visiting researcher at IPU for seven weeks. The internship is a start of establishing a long-term collaboration between his unit at the in Poland and KTH.

Where do you normally do your research?

I work as an assistant professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics of the West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin. As part of my scientific work, I deal with modelling and experimental research of the dynamic properties of machine tools. My recent research concerns the use of composite machine tool frames to increase the stability of machining.”

Why are you interested in this field, what's the attraction?

“I’m interested in the current trend towards developing modular machine tools. Nowadays, machine tools are built largely from ready-made elements, i.e., electro-spindles, tool heads, guide systems, control systems, etc. Often, these elements shape machine tool dynamic properties coming down to the appropriate design of the dynamic properties of the machine frames and structure. Hence, the use of composite machine tool frames seems to be an interesting and attractive way of dealing with the problem.”

Why did you choose KTH?

The Precision Engineering Metrology (PEM) Team, which is part Manufacturing and Measurement Systems (MMS) unit at IPU, is working extensively on machine tools capability evaluation and has great achievements in this area. We contacted the team asking about the possibility for an internship here. To our surprise, the PEM team coordinator is from Poland too, so it was easy to get onboard (laugh). During the internship, I will focus on modelling and experimental research of dynamic interactions between machine tools and their foundations, which is an important issue from the point of view of vibration transmission between machine tools and their foundations. I will stay in PEM team for seven weeks. Nevertheless, there is an ongoing discussion for establishing a long-term collaboration between PEM and my unit in Poland.“

What do you hope to contribute with/learn?

“As a result of our cooperation, we want to develop a modelling methodology that will not only predict the dynamic interactions between machine tools and their foundations but will also serve as a basis for optimizing such structures. We hope that it will be possible to derive guidelines for setting up new machine tools and designing tailor-made foundations.”
