Research Engineer in Design of Soft Robot Circulatory Loops for MRI Testing

School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health at KTH

Job description

We are looking for an ambitious individual to join our interdisciplinary team as a research
engineer in Design of a Robotic MRI test-rig across the Intelligent Heart Technology Lab at
the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), https://www.kth.se/profile/seraina and the Clinical Physiology Group at Karolinska Institute (KI). Candidates with mechatronics, biomedical, mechanical, electrical, or computer engineering profiles and research interests in imaging are welcome to apply.
We aim at improving people´s cardiovascular health through full field study of fluid and
tissue mechanics of the human body, specifically utilizing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Cardiovascular Flow Loops offer a unique setup for such detailed assessment, replicating key
aspects of the cardiovascular system in a bench-top hydraulic model, fundamentally
expanding what physicians and engineers can measure, analyze, and iterate on to provide
experimental evidence of physiological benefit prior to clinical translation. This project forms
the basis of an on-going long-term collaboration between respective laboratories at KTH and
KI.
As a research engineer you will design, build and test a novel MR-compatible flow loop by
applying soft robotic design principles with the purpose of enabling unforeseen levels of
insights through mapping of flow fields and tissue biomechanics. The project includes
iterative testing of the flow loop in a clinical MRI environment, showcasing the potential of
the developed technology and laying the foundation for continued translational robotics
studies and physiological imaging work.
