Postdoc in experimental characterisation of dewatering

KTH Royal Institute of Technology, School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health

Job description

Would you like to use advanced imaging to see what happens inside bio-based materials as they are pressed and dried? We are looking for a postdoc at the Department of Fibre and Polymer Technology at KTH.

In a Formas-funded project together with Hitachi Energy and Nordic Seafarm, we develop knowledge and tools to reduce the energy used in the dewatering and drying of cellulose-based materials. Your role is to build the experimental methodology and produce data that reveal the internal state of cellulose fibre mats during pressing and heating.

You will design and build a lab-scale hot press, plan and carry out measurements at neutron and X-ray sources (e.g. ISIS and MAX IV/ESRF) and apply methods such as scattering, OCT and NMR to capture water transport, steam formation and structural evolution. You will collect industrial reference data, analyse and publish the results, and work closely with a modelling postdoc and with the industrial partners.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
  • Documented scientific expertise in experimental characterisation of porous or fibrous materials, or in multiphase flow, demonstrated through publications.
  • Experience of advanced imaging or measurement methods, e.g. X-rays or neutrons, OCT or NMR.
  • Very good command of English, spoken and written, as it is required in the daily work.
  • As a person you are independent, take initiative and have a strong ability to collaborate in an interdisciplinary environment.

Preferred qualifications

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline
  • Experience of measurements at a synchrotron or neutron source, including beamtime applications and data analysis.
  • Experience of designing and building experimental equipment, e.g. press or drying rigs.
  • Experience of dewatering and drying of pulp, paper or other bio-based materials.
  • Teaching abilities.
  • Awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with specific focus on gender equality.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal skills.
