About me

I am Professor Professor in Mammalian Cell-Based Bioprocess Technology, Head of CETEG Cell Technology Group and Director of VINNOVA Competence Centre for Advanced BioProduction by Continuous Processing, AdBIOPRO (https://www.kth.se/adbiopro). AdBIOPRO is a highly multi-disciplinary Centre dedicated to biomanufacturing of biologics and gathering eight academic groups from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Lund University, Karolinska Hospital, Karolinska Institutet and Linköping University, as well as 16 industrial partners, Alfa Laval, ArgusEye, AstraZeneca, BioInvent International, BioLamina, Cellcolabs, Cellevate, CCRM Nordic, Cytiva, Merck KGaA Darmstadt Germany, Magic Bioprocessing, Metenova a company of Repligen, NorthX Biologics, Nyctea Technologies, Servier, TimeGate Instruments and Valneva.

My background is BSc Eng. Sciences, MSc Electrical Engineering, MSc Biotechnology (University Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium) and PhD Automatic Control/Modelling/ Biotechnology (University of Louvain, Belgium). I have some 40 years of experience in mammalian cell culture including ≥ 10 years in biopharmaceutical industry at Pharmacia Upjohn/Biovitrum, Stockholm, nowadays Swedish Orphan Biovitrum, working, among others, as Senior Project Manager for the development of recombinant drug protein based on mammalian cell cultivation, Head of Eucaryotic Pilot Plant, Responsible of development support for cGMP commercial recombinant factor VIII cultivation process, business development support. I joined KTH in 2008, when I was offered to lead the animal cell cultivation activities. My group is focusing on cell-based processes for biologics production, high cell density perfusion of CHO and HEK293 cells, monitoring, automation, mathematical modelling for the production of glycoproteins, viral vectors and cells for human therapy. I am leader in perfusion process of established cell lines and was the first to publish cell densities higher than 200 millions cells/mL in CHO cell perfusion process. My research is highly multi-disciplinary through extensive collaborations in academia and industry. Beside my role in AdBIOPRO, I am currently co-PI in the Innovation Milieu GeneNova for a Safer, More Efficacious and Accessible AAV Gene Therapy, co-PI of the Innovation Milieu StartCell, dedicated to induced pluripotent stem cells, and have been Coordinator of the EU projects iConsensus, Integrated control and sensing platform for biopharmaceutical cultivation process high-throughput development and production, och HESUB, High Efficient Single-Use-Bioreactor simulating mammalian tissue conditions for expression and proliferation.
