Dilip Khatiwada holds a PhD in Energy Technology from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden. His doctoral thesis provides insights on the sustainability of biofuel/bioenergy production and its potential role in the mitigation of climate change, improved energy security and sustainable development in different development contexts, as well as methodological contributions for assessing the sustainability in connection with energy and climate policies. Dilip is a mechanical engineer and holds two Masters Degrees in Sustainable Energy Engineering and Public Administration/Policy (with a major in development studies).
Dilip has around 18 years of work experience in several private, public and international development agencies. He held several positions such as manager at a multinational private company, assistance spokesperson at the Ministry of Environment, component manager at an environmental project of Danish International Development Agency, national focal person at the Regional Air Quality Project, national specialist at Asian Development Bank sponsored water supply and sanitation project, plant manager of sewage treatment plant, and under-secretary (technical) at the government of Nepal. Additionally, he has undertaken a numbers of national and international training programs on project development and management, renewable energy technologies, bioenergy systems, and cleaner production.
Dilip has worked as a visiting researcher at the Brazilian Bioethanol Science and Technology Laboratory (CTBE) in Brazil and spent a research period at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria. His current research is focused on the sustainability assessment of energy systems, especially focusing on bioenergy development. He has also worked as an expert/researcher in waste-to-biogas project in Bolivia and in preparing a national biofuel strategy for Indonesia. He is also engaged in coordinating/teaching two Masters Level courses at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. He has contributed in a couple of peer-review journal papers, book chapters, popular science articles, and presented/participated in various international energy and environmental/sustainability forums/workshops.
