About me
Magnus Wiktorsson is Professor of production logistics and Head of department for Production Engineering (IPU) at KTH. This department is the merger (July 2022) of the previous department for Sustainable Production Develoment (HPU) at KTH Södertälje, and the department for Production Engineering (IIP) at KTH Stockholm.
Prof Wiktorsson's research interest concerns how complex production logistic systems can be described and predicted. The application areas are within manufacturing industry and his research is based on a strong systemic and mathematical interest. His research concerns two ongoing major changes in production logistics: the digitization of all processes and the need for transformation into environmentally sustainable production. The questions are partly about how new material flows for manufacturing can enable more sustainable industry and consumption, and partly on how comprehensive digitalization of development and operating processes changes the terms of production logistics. The challenge in the field is often to balance many dimensions to achieve an economically, socially and ecologically sustainable system.
Magnus Wiktorsson has a professional background with experience from business, government and universities. After a MSc in 1995 and a PhD degree in 2000 at KTH, he worked as a consultant for industrial customers for five years, and during 2005 - 2010 as program leader at VINNOVA, with research programs and research funding in product and production development. In 2008 he started part-time at Mälardalen University, as a leader of the industry/university collaboration Center for Product Realisation and from 2010 full time at MDH with research and teaching. In 2014 he became a professor in production systems at Mälardalen University and had a number of assignments, including research leader, vice-dean for one school at MDH, as well as MDH's pro-dean of research and research education. In November 2017 he moved to KTH as professor at KTH Campus Södertälje. In April 2019 he was appointed head of department at HPU at KTH Södertälje, and July 2021 appointed head of department at IIP at KTH Stockholm. Since July 1, 2022 he is heading the merged department for Production Engineering with units in both Stockholm and Södertälje. He is also active in national manufacturing initiatives such as Net Zero Industry, Produktion2030 and member of the presidium of the Swedish Production Academy.
Industry/academy/society collaboration is central for Wiktorsson. He was instrumental for the creation of Produktionslyftet (from a Vinnova role), the MDH collaboration centers and structures of CPR, Innofacture, Prepare, Gear Up, MITC and others, initiated XPRES (Excellence in Production Research), has also been the Member of the Boards of Munktell Science Park, Västerås Science Park, CREATE and Södertälje Science Park. At KTH he led the campus Södertälje with a number of industry-related education programs and research projects launched, including the extreme fast launch of a one-year program for 300+ students during the pandemic. He has had three research projects on the IVA 100-list in the recent years and as head of department for Production Engineering (IPU) at KTH, structures for industry-collaboration is of essence for all the education and research activities. He is currently leading the plans to establish a national excellence cluster on the topic of "Production Technologies for the Circular Factories" and is engaged in the national battery initative COMPEL from a KTH perspective.
