Innovation Management: Organizational Responses to Technological Change

In theory, when a new technology substitutes an old one, the process for a large firm is described as quite straight forward: disinvest in the old technology and invest in the new. In practice, things are more complicated.

Under the label “Organizational Responses to Technology Shifts”, I address the question of how firms should cope with the pass over phase of the S-shaped model of technological discontinuities (Foster, 1986).

In a first paper in Creativity and Innovation Management I and colleague explored how an incumbant firm successfully utilized portfolios of combinations of business model and technical innovations in order to respond to environmental challenges to successfully respond to three major disruptions.

In a second paper, in Technovation, I and colleagues explore the use of explorative networks as mean for sustainability transition and business model innovation in established firms.

In our latest paper, I and other colleagues have investigated competence renewal under skill shortage conditions in the Swedish automotive industry.

Together these papers provides means for how established firms can deals with change during times of technological disruption .
