Human Neurotrauma Modelling
Brain Trauma Evaluation towards Improved Road Safety
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant threat to road safety. It is a heterogeneous disease that impairs various road users with different injury mechanisms. Existing evaluation of safety products follows a "one-size-fits-all" approach with little consideration of the complexity of TBI and the diversity of traffic environments. More rational strategies are to establish injury-specific criteria to customize protection principles with the account of the critical injury types endured by their intended users. This project will combine advanced biomechanical modeling with in-depth accident analysis to improve the brain injury assessment tool and develop injury-specific risk functions. An advanced computational head model equipped with injury-specific criteria will be delivered. New knowledge of the injury types that require prioritized intervention for different road users will be generated by analyzing the injury data from four international traffic datasets. The partner responsible for the application is the Royal Institute of Technology. Partners are Autoliv (Dr Shiyang Meng) and POC (Dr Johan Weman).
