SeminariumResearch through Design

What is the 'empirical data' in these two papers?¶

Finding design qualities in a tangible programming space - Fernaeus & Tholander¶

Differentiated Driving Range - Lundström¶

Preparatory questions¶

- what role will prototypes play in research?- Can practical design work in itself be considered a 'knowledge contribution'?- Are there any differences in design intentions within a research project, compared to design in general?- Is research in tech domains such as these ever replicable? How may we account for aspects such as time/historical setting, skills of the designers, available tools, etc? - Are there any important differences with design driven research compared to other research practices?- What gets to be a research method? What are the benefits and possibilities with research-through-design? Issues? What can you learn from such a process?- Also think about how you could approach your master thesis by using a research-through-design?¶

Optional readings:¶

Frayling, C. Research in art and design. Royal College of Art London, 1993. pdf¶

Zimmerman, J., Forlizzi, J., and Evenson, S. Research through design as a method for interaction design research in hci. In Proc. CHI’07, ACM (2007), 493–502.¶

Fallman, D. The interaction design research triangle of design practice, design studies, and design exploration. Design Issues 24, 3 (2008), 4–18.¶
