The Project Report Series

The course DT2213 Musical Communication and Music Technology includes a project work and since 2015 a project report submitted as a peer reviewed conference paper. Below are the projects that got the Best Paper Award, and in the submenu you will find links to all reports with additional material.

Best Paper Award 2015

Motion Synth Carl Thomé

Even though they differ in the physical domain, digital video and audio share many characteristics. Both are temporal data streams often stored in buffers with 8-bit values. This paper investigates a method for creating harmonic sounds with a video signal as input. A musical instrument is proposed, that utilizes video in both a sound synthesis method, and in a controller interface for selecting musical notes at specific velocities. The resulting instrument was informally determined by the author to sound both pleasant and interesting, but hard to control, and therefore suited for synth pad sounds.

Best Paper Award 2014

An Accelerometer Instrument William Ängeby & Carl Wersäll

This certain project is about creating an instrument using four accelerometers and the software Pure Data. An instrument was created where the four accelerometers triggers different samples and/or control certain parameters of a synth created in Pure Data. The result is a working instrument which with a bit more tweaking and time spent on it together with some practicing could make a somewhat useful tool for a musician.

Painting with Music Christoffer Carlsson and Kristian Orellana

In this paper a music visualization software developed in Processing called Painting with Music is presented. Using a smartphone connected to the computer via Open Sound Control, a user is able to paint onto the computer screen wirelessly. Variables connected to the cursor such as size and color is directly affected by the sound input to the program thus making it possible to paint and visualize music simultaneously.
