Private spaces

Seminar description

Private and public spaces, interior as well as exterior, are interconnected and historically, ideologically and socially, the relationship and boundaries between them change. This is one of the focuses we have at the Department of Interior Architecture and Furniture Design and in the master’s programme in Spatial Design. How can private and public spaces be designed, used, defined, reprogrammed and rebuilt? How can connections between private and public spaces be affected through interior architecture and design? Can more sustainable conditions and contexts be created?

Ernesto Garcia is the new doctoral student at the Department of Interior Architecture and Furniture Design. He will start his doctoral studies in August 2024, and he will introduce us to his doctoral thesis project that connects to this theme of private and public spaces.

We will also present the Nordic network “Urban Interiors”. This network is oriented towards urban interiors and the meetings and relationships that are created between private and public spaces, both outside and inside, which define the city. The purpose is to form a forum and network called “Urban Interiors”, for research in Sweden and the Nordic countries with international connections. The network shall enable interdisciplinary artistic research projects and interdisciplinary collaborations and discussions where theory, history and artistic practice can meet.

Ernesto Garcia is an interior architect and furniture designer SIR/MSA, and he is currently working at Nyréns architectural office in Stockholm.

Kristina Fridh is Professor in Interior Architecture at Konstfack.

Maja Willén is senior lecturer at IBIS in Konstfack.
