Space Rendezvous

Space Rendezvous Autumn 2026 | Space Electronics

The autumn edition of Space Rendezvous will take place on Thursday 5 November, with the theme Space Electronics. The event is open to everyone. Fika is served from 15:00, and the day ends with a Space Pub at Tolvan.

Time: Thu 2026-11-05, 15:15–18:00
Location: Gradängsalen, Teknikringen 1, KTH Campus
Fika: from 15:00

Registration: Register here

15.00 Fika

15.15 Mark Pearce, KTH - The science and technology behind the Nobel Prize in Physics 2026

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to Francis Halzen “for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin”. I will explain the science and technology behind this year’s Nobel Prize in Physics, and outline the process leading up to the Prize announcement.

16.00–16.15 Break

16.15 Lars Bylander, Tomas Karlsson, KTH - Arrival of the ESA mission BepiColombo to Mercury and the KTH instrument on board

The two spacecraft of the ESA/JAXA mission BepiColombo will arrive at Mercury in December this year. On board the spacecraft are many scientific instruments, among them one, MEFISTO, that has been built here at KTH. MEFISTO will measure the electric field around Mercury, contributing critically to the understanding of the physics of the planet's space environment. We will discuss the principles of electric field measurements and the instrument design, as well as giving some examples of science questions that can be answered by the MEFISTO measurements.

17.00–17.15 Break

17.15 Carl-Mikael Zetterling (Bellman), KTH - Reliability of Gamma-Irradiated 4H-SiC Bipolar Devices and Circuits

Electronics for space, nuclear and accelerator systems must work close to sources of heat and radiation, without heavy shielding or cooling. 4H-SiC bipolar technology is a strong candidate: its wide bandgap (3.26 eV), roughly 2.2 times lower electron–hole pair yield than Si, and strong Si–C bond give an intrinsic advantage, and earlier KTH work showed SiC TTL circuits surviving very high doses. Survival is, however, not qualification. This work summarizes a systematic study of how bias state, dose rate, temperature and oxide/interface processing govern the gamma response of 4H-SiC bipolar junction transistors (BJTs) and monolithic TTL inverters from the KTH bipolar process.

18.15 Space Pub

Tolvan, Osquars Backe 12  , hosted by Programrådet Elektrosektion.
