Did you know that Stockholm’s subway system is known as the world’s longest art gallery? In most stations, you can find a unique theme, beautiful paintings and interesting sculptures, making your daily commute an artistic journey. Join me as I rank my top 5 favourite subway stations art!

My Top 5 picks:

1. Solna Centrum

The Solna Centrum station, with its stunning scarlet-red and green landscape reminiscent of a forest during an evening sunset, stands as my absolute favorite!

3. Stadion

The Stadion station boasts a vibrant rainbow set against a brilliant blue backdrop. Adorning the curved walls of the cave subway system, the essence of a arched rainbow gives an immersive feeling.

4. Tekniska Högskolan

The Tekniska Högskolan station will be your most memorable station! As you can tell by it’s name, this is the station that takes you to the KTH’s main (Valhallavägen) campus.  Adorning the platform are five captivating regular polyhedra, each meticulously crafted to embody Plato’s elemental concepts: fire, water, air, earth, and ether. These geometric installations stand as representations, seamlessly fusing mathematical elegance with the ancient principles of nature’s building blocks, apt for the station representing a technical university.

5. Kungsträdgården

The Kungsträdgården station is easily one of the beautiful station with it vivid colour palette and beautiful sculptures is easily one of my favourite artworks. The station takes you to Kungsträdgården (The King’s Garden), a beautiful garden in the city. An interesting fact about this station is that there is a notable population of the Lessertia dentichelis spider 🕷️🕸️ living in the station, the only location in Sweden where the species can be found (reference: “Dvärgspindel, MTR Stockholm”).

Other stations that I believe have very good art: The 8-bit style artwork in Thoridsplan, childlike imaginative artwork at the Hallonbergen station, and the fluorescent lights at the Citybanan station.
