KTH Climate Action Centre and RISE hosts workshop on materials and consumption

Mingle during the event
Published Jun 02, 2023

The multi-stakeholder workshop held at the Climate Action Centre house enabled researchers from different disciplines and industry partners to discuss how to address the sustainability challenges connected to materials, and biomaterials in particular.

Hosted by the research institute RISE and KTH Climate Action Centre, the purpose of the workshop was to discuss the role of bio-based materials and consumption for reaching a climate neutral, safe and resilient society. Some urgent sustainability challenges connected to materials include how to achieve carbon neutral value chains, and lowering the demand of materials and energy from production and consumption in a circular economy. Potential goal conflicts also exist, e.g. between circularity and the spread of toxic compounds in nature and society, and between an increased use of biomaterials and biodiversity. During the workshop, representatives from KTH, Mistra Sustainable Consumption, Treesearch and RISE held presentations on their latest research, and stakeholders from Axfoundation, Billerud, Duni, Alfa Laval and Scania held presentations on their sustainability challenges and accomplishments. Participants from Axfood, IVL and Stora Enso were present as well. Discussions in groups followed, where areas for investigation and potential collaborations between the different parties were explored. After the event, a lunch and mingle took place.
