KTH Climate Action Centre and KTH Foodtech organised a competition in May where students came together to develop solutions to reduce food waste. The two week long competition culminated in the competing teams presenting their ideas for the jury consisting of representatives from ICA Gruppen, Arla Foods, Jordbruksverket, Foodloopz Sweden AB, Crumbs, and SAMS - Samarbete för minskat matsvinn.

At the beginning of May, four teams of students were tasked with finding a solution to the challenge of how to “prevent food waste and losses in the supply chain (and increase profitability) by visualizing and matching raw material, excess capacity and demand.” Over the past two weeks, students participated in a sprint day with representatives of the companies to carve out an initial idea. Students then had the opportunity to participate in knowledge and skill building sessions at KTH Climate Action Centre, where they had a QnA session with a company representative, a lecture about sustainability and food from KTH Royal Institute of Technology researcher Rebecka Milestad, and a lecture on how to pitch an idea from KTH Innovation! For our hackathon final on the 16th of May, students presented their solutions to a jury comprised of 6 company representatives and the winning team was chosen for their solution “FoodMatch”, an app that allows you to find a buyer for food waste! The team won a presentation to SAMS - Samarbete för minskat matsvinn to see if the idea is possible to continue developing/implementing as well as 10.000 SEK! Congratulations to the winning team!
