Application of AI-powered environmental sustainability optimisation techniques to a new production plant, designed and taken into operation within the time-span of the project.

Aim and objective

Production plants contribute, throughout their life-cycle, to large amounts of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. A large amount of the GHG emissions in operation and dismantling are designed into the plant construction. In this project, we have the unique opportunity to apply AI-powered environmental sustainability optimisation techniques to a new production plant that will be designed and taken into operation within the time-span of the project, belonging to the problem owner Diamyd Medical. This allows us, with extremely short time to impact, to apply AI within the Industry 4.0 paradigm already during design and construction to minimize GHG emissions of the plant when in operation, and to support decision making and trade-offs when controlling the production with regards to vital parameters such as productivity, worker wellbeing, sustainability goals and waste management.

Alongside with Diamyd Medical, KTH (HPU and Mechatronics department) will contribute to the project with strong research competence in system architecture, sustainable production, industrial transformation, and environmental strategic analysis. MainlyAI AB, an industrial AI technology SME, will contribute with competence in AI and system architecture. An AI system, ALISTAIR, for minimizing and controlling GHG emissions will be developed and applied in the project to optimize factory floor layout, scheduling, green shifting the production process, waste management, and audit trail. These use cases will generate valuable lessons to share with other organizations. Through intelligent use of connected modular factory components with the solutions developed, we foresee a GHG emission decrease of the plant by 7-15% and that proper waste management procedures will reduce GHG emission by 25-75%.
