Ruben

Ruben from Indonesia. He is currently studying master’s programme in Materials Science and Engineering. He completed his bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering at Diponegoro University, Indonesia. He really love sports, outdoors, and exploring new things.

Why did you choose this master’s programme at KTH?

My background is in Mechanical Engineering, and I have a great interest in materials science, particularly metal performance and material failure analysis. During my undergraduate studies, I got fascinated by how materials react under various conditions, why they fail at certain times, and how engineers may improve their performance and reliability.
 
This enthusiasm is directly connected to my current master's study at KTH. The Materials Science and Engineering program allows me to explore further into materials, from fundamental ideas like thermodynamics, phase transformations, and diffusion to their practical applications in real-world industrial processes. I chose  KTH because the program is internationally known and has significant industrial connections. The mix of experienced teachers, advanced courses, and engagement with significant industrial companies ensures that the learning experience is both academically challenging and practical.
 
This is one of the most beneficial parts of my KTH studies. I am not only learning the theory of materials, but also how to apply this knowledge to real-world engineering challenges, particularly those involving metals, manufacturing, sustainability, and industrial development.

What are the best aspects of your programme?

One of the most beneficial parts of my education is the close link between academic knowledge and industrial application. Many courses teach not only theoretical concepts or difficult formulas, but also how to apply these principles in real-world engineering scenarios. This makes learning more relevant because I can easily see why I'm studying.

I especially enjoy the involvement of industry professionals. Their knowledge allows us to better understand current difficulties, updated technologies, and effective solutions in the industry. It provides a broader perspective of materials science and demonstrates how vital this discipline is to many industries, including steel production, manufacturing, energy, and sustainable materials development.

Another factor that I like is the learning environment. The approach encourages students to think critically, ask questions, and make connections between diverse topics. This has given me more confidence in assessing and understanding materials-related challenges from both scientific and technical perspectives.

What are some of your favorite courses so far?

Material Processes is one of my favourite courses so far. This course was enjoyable for me since it provided a greater understanding of the reasons behind various industrial processes. Instead of simply studying what happens throughout a process, I also studied why it happens, what factors influence the outcome, and what effects it can have on the final material properties.

The course also demonstrated how closely materials science is related to actual industrial practice. I really loved the course's strong connections to Swedish companies. A site visit allowed me to witness real-world procedures and correlate them to what I had studied in class. This experience made the course much more engaging and memorable because I was able to witness how academic information is implemented in an industrial setting.
 
Material Processes was helpful to me because it bridged the gap between classroom learning and real-world engineering practice. It increased my understanding of how materials engineers help to improve processes, product quality, and sustainability in industry.

How would you describe your time at KTH so far?

I would describe my experience at KTH as both fun and challenging. So far, I've genuinely enjoyed my studies, even though they involve a great deal of time and devotion. The classes encourage me to continue studying, think critically, and approach problems from several angles. I feel that challenges are necessary for personal and academic progress, and KTH has provided me with numerous possibilities to develop in this way.

The study environment at KTH has also been extremely helpful. The atmosphere is welcoming and supportive, making it simpler to ask questions, share ideas, and learn from others. I enjoy how friendly and open-minded the lecturers are, and how they encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning.

Living and studying in Stockholm has also provided valuable experiences. It has helped me grow as a student and as a person. Overall, my time at KTH has helped me become more self-sufficient, confident, and driven to further develop my expertise in materials science and engineering.
