Postdoc in Philosophy of Science, KTH Royal Institute of Technology

Published Feb 04, 2019

The postdoc will be part of a new inter-disciplinary project, where philosophers collaborate with climate scientists. The purpose of the project is to examine how values influence research on climate models, and how these values might influence decision-making in society. How do values influence climate models, and in the end climate projections? And what values ought to affect scientists as experts and policy advisors?

The work will be performed in collaboration with the Department of Meteorology at Stockholm University (MISU), the University of Oslo (UiO) in Norway, and the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MetNo). Another postdoc in the project with natural science focus will also be recruited for the project, positioned at MISU. The person who gets this position at KTH is expected to be an active driving force in cooperation with the other participants in the project. Thus, the planned work is not a purely theoretical investigation, but the intention is that the collaboration will be used as a detailed case study of how choices, values, and uncertainty interact in the process from science to decision-making in society.

Doctoral degree is a requirement, as well as good English. Applicants should have a strong background in philosophy of science, preferably values in science, have demonstrated the ability to publish in international peer review systems, and be strongly motivated. Previous research on values in science is important. Knowledge about climate science and climate models are also important. As the project involves collaboration with researchers from other disciplines, it is important to have good communication skills. Documented experience of work with researchers from natural science is therefore also important.

2 year position. Starting date flexible.
