Antoine Laurent de Lavoisier

Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier was central to the 18th-century chemical revolution, he had a large influence on both the history of chemistry and the history of biology. In 1785 he was namned the director of the Académie des Sciences. Throughout his career he worked closely with his wife Marie-Anne de Lavoisier.

During the French Revloution Lavoisier was accused of defrauding the state of money, and was guillotined on 8 May 1794.

After the execution the mathematician Lagrange is said to have commented: "It took them only an instant to cut off this head, and one hundred years might not suffice to reproduce its like."
