Competence needs for the smart buildings of the future

This research project addresses the engineering skills required for the planning, construction and management of the smart and sustainable buildings. It is based on an interview study conducted with project partners from KTH Live-In Lab.

Background

The starting point for the study is that the traditionally slow-moving construction sector, with a focus on property management, is undergoing rapid changes in areas such as digitalisation, sustainability and entrepreneurship. Among other things, the increased ability to collect, save, combine and analyse data from the use of properties places greater demands on the ability to analyse these large amounts of data.

The development entails a need for new combinations of competences – not only technical, but also from the areas of business and behavioural science – and puts the focus on how actors such as KTH can meet these new needs.

Applied interdisciplinarity

The project is informed by two streams of academic literature. The main questions of the project are related to academic curriculum development, as studied in an academic tradition close to the fields of pedagogy and higher education studies. Both of these fields fall within the realm of social science. Contextual understanding relies on studies of construction and energy use in buildings and real estate, as studied in the corresponding engineering fields.
