K-ULF Teachers and researchers collaborate for a strong research project together.

Published Feb 23, 2021

The main purpose of the Compensatory Teaching for Learning and Research Project [K-ULF] is to increase research in collaboration between higher education institutions and local municipalities.

Support all students' learning and development

House of Science, Department of Learning, City of Stockholm, Haninge and Lidingö municipality are together developing a model where municipalities, with different size and demographic conditions and with similar challenges work together on practical research projects.

“Within K-ULF, we want to investigate how teaching in science, technology and mathematics can be designed to support all students' learning and development and compensate for the differences which are found in areas such as study results, digitization and language”

Increased equality in study results

The main activity in Phase 1 is to develop and test research ideas in collaboration with VFU (School placement education) coordinators at the local municipalities, teachers in participating schools, students within the master's degree-engineering program and supervising researchers at KTH.

Phase 2 - develop new teaching elements and didactic methods in relation to the project's main focus, i.e. how digitization and laboratory work in the school can contribute to increased equality in study results among students.

The different roles

  • KTH contributes to the collaboration with students, researchers in didactics and teachers who are responsible for VFU and supervise degree projects.
  • The municipalities contribute to the collaboration with teachers and school activities as well as supervision of VFU students and collaboration on degree projects.
  • The municipalities are the initiators of developing relevant issues and their school activities form the basis for the studies' data collection
  • KTH is the initiator of the design and coordination of the scientific study such as its choice of didactic models and implementation.
  • The House of Science operates as a platform and together with the Department of Learning at KTH, is responsible for the overall coordination.

The collaboration models

Meetings and workshops have been held with teachers from the three municipalities. Challenges that they see in their daily work have been discussed. Based on this, questions have been formulated in consultation with the teachers, with the aim of researching and developing the areas that they consider to be most important for strengthening their compensatory assignments.

In the end, it's all about giving all children and young people the best possible conditions for their lifelong learning from preschool to adult education”. Anna Brunner Cederlund ULF Uppsala
