As an engineering student and future professional you need to be able to communicate effectively in speech and writing. In our courses in English for academic and professional purposes, you will get the opportunity to take your English to the next level. Choose between a campus-based course over one or two periods, or a shorter online course.

Why English at KTH?

You already have a good level of English from school. Our courses build on what you already know, and enhance your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, especially in your own discipline. We help you expand your technical and academic vocabulary. You learn how to structure and write professional texts, deliver audience-friendly presentations, and become more aware of the different registers in English. All this helps you gain more confidence and prepares you for further studies in English and a professional career in an international environment.

How do the courses work?

We work with authentic texts and other material with a connection to STEM disciplines and professions. In our 7.5-credit courses, structured as a series of seminars, we combine teacher input with discussions and tasks, and you practice communicating in English together with other students from different disciplines and from different parts of the world. In our online courses, you study modules where you explore topics connected to academic and professional knowledge and pursuits, and complete tasks and assessments based on these.

All courses are assessed continuously and you receive feedback on all assignments, with a focus on effective communication and precise use of English.

Special prerequisites

Courses LS1416 and LS1452 prepare students for STEM studies in English. These two courses have no special prerequisites.

Courses LS2440, LS2441, LS2442, LS2443, and LS2444 are more advanced. These courses require documented knowledge in a STEM discipline, with a minimum of 90 ECTS, and English proficiency equivalent to B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages . B2 level is a natural continuation from studies at high school, and it is the level usually required for writing and presenting scientific work.
