KTH partner in new initiative to promote innovation in the field of energy

Published Mar 21, 2018

KTH is contributing to the shift to sustainable energy. As one of eight initiatives, KTH Innovation, together with Sting and InnoEnergy, will receive funding from the Swedish Energy Agency to contribute to the commercialization of innovation in the field of energy.

The aim of the initiative is to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable energy system, and to take advantage of Sweden’s existing potential for innovation.

A sustainable, competitive Sweden

KTH Innovation takes in around 300 ideas every year, and has already supported several interesting projects in the field. Hope is that this new initiative will create even more opportunities in the future.

KTH Innovation focuses on earlystage ideas to enable more ideas sprung from KTH to reach the market and be commercialized. Our hope is that we, together with our partners who focus on the later stages of development, can contribute to accelerating the shift in our energy system, and as such contribute to creating a more sustainable and competitive Sweden, says Lisa Ericsson, Head of KTH Innovation.

KTH, Sting and InnoEnergy have already established cooperation in other areas, but warmly welcome this initiative from the Swedish Energy Agency.

We are excited that the Swedish Energy Agency has given us the opportunity to lead this effort in the Stockholm region, especially since sustainable development is one of the main focus areas of KTH. That makes this initiative extra important to us, says Lisa Ericsson.

Accelerating the transition

The aim of the initiative is to gather forces to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable energy system, and to take advantage of Sweden’s existing potential for innovation.

We want to create opportunities to companies with innovations in the energy sector to commercialize their ideas. An initiative like this creates a clear connection to local and regional innovation systems, enables everyone to pull in the same direction, and established new cooperation mechanisms, where we can implement concrete measures to commercialize energy innovations and as such contribute to the shift in energy systems, says Sasan Shaba, Portfolio Manager & Business Developer at the Swedish Energy Agency.

The initiative starts as a one-year pilot project, with the possibility of a two-year extension. By providing companies with concrete business development methods, and targeted support, the aim is to enable more solutions from KTH to reach the market.

The funding will be used for support in business development, education, and networking, where energy innovations will be matched with investors and big companies.
