Wave-powered desalination systems

Havstraum develops wave-powered desalination systems designed for reliable operation in harsh marine environments while reducing maintenance requirements offshore. Our technology addresses some of the main barriers that have limited the scalability and practicality of offshore desalination systems.

The diesel–desalination paradox forces offshore systems to rely on fossil fuels to produce freshwater. Havstraum addresses this challenge by using wave energy to power desalination directly.

By combining wave energy with desalination, Havstraum enables more resilient, sustainable, and cost-effective freshwater production for offshore and remote marine applications.

Team

Founded by Rimmie Duraisamy, PhD student at KTH, together with Juan Zapata Tamayo and Kjell Andersson from the Engineering Design Department at KTH.

KTH Innovation Launch

KTH Innovation Launch is a program for promising startup projects from KTH. We welcome new teams into the program twice a year. Around 10% of all ideas that KTH Innovation supports join this program.

In addition to business development support from KTH Innovation, the teams in the program get access to offices and meeting rooms in KTH Innovation's premises at Teknikringen 1. Every week, they meet over lunch and take part in a tailor-made workshop program.

They also get access to our makerspace and production studio. Together with the program's over 350 alumni projects, they form a supportive community, growing and developing together.

Participants in the program also get an opportunity to get an experienced mentor via KTH Innovation's mentor program.
