Education for environment and sustainable development

Welcome to the pages about environment and sustainable development in education. From here you can find courses and programs that focus on environment and sustainable development. We also have the toolbox that provides ideas and advice on how to integrate these topics into the courses.

KTH's Vision

One of the goals in KTH's Vision 2027 is to be one of Europe’s leading research universities in environmental science and sustainable development. KTH graduates are driving forces in the development of technology and society and KTH education stimulates independent thinking, creativity and curiosity and applies critical examination of existing technological practices. Engineers and architects identify solutions which embody both innovation and enhancement with a clear social dimension, a distinct focus on sustainability and, for some, also an artistic dimension.

What is sustainable development?

The concept of sustainable development was defined in the Brundtland Commission's report "Our common future" published in 1987 on behalf of the UN:

"Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It contains within it two key concepts: the concept of 'needs', in particular the essential needs of the world's poor, to which overriding priority should be given; and the idea of limitations imposed by the state of technology and social organization on the environment's ability to meet present and future needs."

One way to make the concept more concrete is to define it in terms of different dimensions, for example by talking about ecological, social and economic sustainability.

The UN's Sustainable Development Goals
