AI Safety Perception Patterns: Using multiple data sources to produce an AI safety perception map of Stockholm

What makes a city (un)safe? The project AI Safety Perception Patterns is a collaboration between KTH, MIT and the City of Stockholm, attempting to determine the role the urban environment plays in people’s perceived safety. Online survey data are combined with Street View-imagery analysis using AI to predict people’s safety perceptions in relation to the built environment of Stockholm City. This is compared with several urban security indicators (e.g., police records, victimization survey results) to produce a safety perception map, serving as a diagnostic of the safety conditions of Stockholm.
Jonatan Abraham is a doctoral student at the School of Architecture and the Built Environment and will present the current stage of the project, with a focus on the development of the security indicators.
