Realising a research dream

Fredrik Ström, Mawell, Doctoral student in Patient Safety

Senior consultant Fredrik Ström splits his time between consulting firm Mawell and the School of Technology and Health at KTH where he is an industry-employed doctoral student in the field of Patient Safety. The things he learns as a researcher benefit the firm, and vice versa – he incorporates the issues he faces as a consultant into his research.

“Doing research has been a dream of mine ever since I studied Computer Technology at KTH. At heart, I’m a consultant and I’ve being doing it for 20 years, but I’m also an engineer who wants to delve deeper. Now I can do both. One common problem with being a consultant is that there isn’t always enough time to immerse yourself in the problems you encounter.”

“I’m conducting research in IT, Knowledge Management and Pharmaceutical Management; how the information flow between healthcare providers and patients can be improved and how medicines can be used more efficiently. Being at the School of Technology and Health and close to Karolinska Hospital in Huddinge is a major advantage.”

What are the benefits for Mawell?

“Mawell, which focuses on IT, eHealth and image diagnostics in the healthcare and care sectors, is of course hoping that my research will in time improve the firm’s offering.”

“A constant exchange of knowledge between Mawell and KTH”

“It’s a major expense, but Mawell management realised that there were big knowledge gains to be made here. In order to conduct research 50 percent of the time, it’s important to focus on something that doesn’t sap the energy out of my other work; my projects need to be mutually supportive. This is also a huge personal development opportunity for me.”
