Thesis
KTH has joint regulations for doctoral theses. In addition to these, there may be additional or more stringent requirements at the school level. It is therefore important to review these well in advance of the licentiate seminar or doctoral defence. Below are general instructions and information on where to turn for further support.
To obtain a doctoral or licentiate degree, you must write a doctoral thesis or a licentiate thesis. The thesis may take the form of a compilation thesis or a monograph. It must be written in English, and it must always include an English summary and a Swedish summary. The Guidelines for third-cycle education at KTH set out the general quality requirements for doctoral and licentiate theses. Specific quality requirements may also be stated in the general study syllabus for each third-cycle subject.
Templates and covers
It is recommended, but not mandatory, to use KTH’s official templates (Word and LaTeX/Overleaf): Thesis template
A thesis must have a consistent appearance in accordance with KTH’s visual identity . The cover, title page, and the following page with publication information are designed by the printing service US-AB. If you are unsure which subject should be stated on the cover, contact the doctoral education officer at your school .
Guidance for the “kappa” in doctoral and licentiate theses
Some KTH schools provide internal guidance on the kappa, the summary part of a compilation thesis, as well as the introductory and concluding parts (e.g. introduction, conclusions, and future work) of a monograph thesis. This document is often published on the school’s internal doctoral education webpages.
Contact the doctoral education officers at your school for access to the document.
Finalising a thesis or licentiate thesis
A completed thesis must have a TRITA number and an ISBN number. These are ordered when you apply for a doctoral defence or a licentiate seminar. Read more about TRITA and ISBN .
A completed thesis must be uploaded to DiVA and printed by US-AB . This is usually done a few weeks after submitting your application for a doctoral defence or licentiate seminar. Make sure to follow the checklists in the links above.
Printing a thesis or licentiate thesis
Printing is part of the overall process for the doctoral defence or licentiate seminar.
Printing must be carried out by US-AB . The cover, title page, and the following page with publication information are designed by US-AB. Read more about printing here. The main supervisor’s invoice reference is usually used. Also allow a few days for handling of proof prints and additional days for final printing. Therefore, maintain good communication with US-AB and start the printing process well in advance to meet the deadline.
