Aditya

Aditya is from Bangalore, India. With a background in mechanical and automotive engineering from Vellore, Tamil Nadu, he pursued a Master's programme that would unlock his creativity and help develop a career as a product designer. Aside from his studies, he enjoys activities like playing football and hiking, and he is quite passionate about different types of art, whether it be painting, sketching, modelling, or any other form of creative work. He also enjoys hanging out with his friends and learning new things about Stockholm and Sweden.

Why did you choose this master’s programme at KTH?
I chose this master’s specifically to explore the more creative side of being a designer. Being an engineer, I was quite familiar with engineering aspects and found that this programme was the perfect transition opportunity, providing the right balance of design and engineering. It was also the perfect place to network with people from diverse backgrounds and further widen my horizons.

What are the best aspects of your programme?
The consistent contact and relevance of the courses with the industry are among the best aspects of the programme.
It elevates my confidence in being able to integrate smoothly into the industry.
In addition to this the instructors to create industry like environment, with guidance based structure rather than just instructions to better apply yourself in your professional career in the future.

Have you chosen a specialisation track within the programme? Which track and why?
I picked the Industrial Design Engineering track within this programme, the main reason being that the course structure was built to equip you as a designer with engineering skills. I was also attracted by the clear focus on skills that include sketching, modelling, ideating, and achieving deliverable projects regularly.

What are some of your favourite courses so far?
My favourite courses so far have definitely been Advanced Sketching Exercises, Advanced Product Design, and Develop Creativity. I am also quite excited to start Advanced Formgiving next term.

How do studies at KTH differ from your previous studies?
The courses here employ a more interactive, learn-by-doing structure rather than just providing information. A majority of the courses are project-based, so application is extremely valued. In comparison, my experience as a mechanical engineering student in India was quite theory-oriented, which was a structure that I did not prefer.

How is student life in Stockholm?
I would say student life in Stockholm is quite vibrant, as long as you grab the opportunities that present themselves. There are many events happening throughout the year, like Stockholm Design Week or Stockholm Fashion Week, that are open to the public for free and allow for interesting experiences. In addition to this, being involved in THS and my chapter activities can lead to a great environment for meeting new people and having a more fulfilling student life.

How would you describe your time at KTH so far?
My time so far at KTH has been nothing short of amazing. I have been able to make really good friends in my programme. Being involved with THS and M-chapter’s International group has provided me with a great social life and academic experience. I personally also enjoy the weather, which may come as a surprise, but the feeling of the first snowfall is truly magical. I have also felt a lot of independence and growth, making me more confident that I am equipped with all the academic and soft skills required to thrive anywhere in the future.

What do you want to do after graduating?
Ideally, post-graduation, I would look to work in Stockholm for a design firm/consultancy, further solidifying my career trajectory as a designer. In addition, I'm looking to be fluent in Swedish to broaden my personal and professional opportunities. I would also like to travel and work in as many countries as possible to broaden my design knowledge and perspectives. One day, I would love to establish my own design firm.

What would you like to say to students thinking of choosing KTH for master’s studies?
Personally, I would say KTH is the place to be for anyone looking to expand their horizons in both academics and collaborative skills. That said, ensure the programme aligns with your academic goals. I also suggest contacting a current student in the programme, and I am happy to answer any questions!
