Sergi comes from Barcelona, Spain and completed his bachelor's in Engineering Physics at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in Barcelona. Currently, he's pursuing his master's in Engineering Physics. He likes reading and listening to podcasts in his free time, and he is very passionate about football and Formula 1.

Why did you choose this master's programme at KTH?

After completing my undergraduate studies in Engineering Physics in Barcelona, I wanted to get my master's degree in a different European country. After extensively looking through various universities, it became clear that the master's degree in Engineering Physics at KTH best suited my interests. I have always loved Theoretical Physics, and this master's degree gives me the freedom to tailor my studies significantly to the topics I am most interested in.

In addition, KTH is one of the top technical universities in Europe, right in the heart of Stockholm, an innovation and technology hub and a city with one of the highest life quality indexes in the world.

What are the best aspects of your programme?

One of the best aspects of my programme is the complete flexibility in choosing courses. During the first semester, some courses were mandatory, but after that, you are free to organise your master's studies by selecting your preferred courses from different departments. On top of that, experts in their respective fields often take the lectures. They are eager to have students join their groups to participate in research projects.

Have you chosen a specialisation track within the programme?

Within my master's programme, I follow the Theoretical Physics track, which focuses on fundamental theoretical and computational physics. I have always found it absolutely mesmerising how mathematical expressions can so accurately describe nature. This track offered me the chance to explore how we can apply this knowledge to the minor length scales by using quantum mechanics and quantum field theory.

Furthermore, this track has several student research projects on topics closely related to those taught during the study. This is not only an additional way to deepen your knowledge in a particular field but also an excellent opportunity to observe and learn how research is done.

How do studies at KTH differ from your previous studies?

At KTH, your studies are divided into four periods throughout the year instead of semesters or trimesters. This way, during each period, you will only study for two courses instead of being overloaded with five or more subjects. What I love about this system is that it allows you to focus more during ten weeks on just two specific courses. This helps with time management and lets you dive deeper into the topics so that you do not feel rushed through the weeks.

How is student life in Stockholm?

Stockholm, as a modern, cosmopolitan city, has a lot to offer students, such as cafes, restaurants and bars, as well as a multitude of museums, performing art centres, fantastic architecture and several parks. Gamla Stan, the old town, is particularly beautiful and is my favourite!

KTH has a vibrant student life that includes various clubs and activities. Worthy of special mention is the student union building, Nymble, where one can have lunch, buy books, study throughout the day, and hang out with friends at night. With this, the student union is, in my opinion, one of KTH's strongest features, as it ties the student community together, transforming the university into something more than a place where you go to attend lectures and study.

What do you want to do after graduating?

After graduating, I would like to continue my studies by pursuing a PhD; I am very attracted by the prospect of having the freedom to dive as deep as possible into a research topic.

What would you like to say to students thinking of choosing KTH for master's studies?

Please do it! You won't regret it! I was in your place last year, unsure if moving to Sweden was the right choice for me, but I can assure you it is totally worth it. KTH is a world-renowned university with amazing and diverse student life, an enriching international environment and full of very welcoming people that will allow you to grow professionally and personally.
