Shuang enjoys getting to know students with different cultural backgrounds

Shuang is 24 years old and from China. At KTH, he is a student of the master's programme in Network Services and Systems. In his free time, Shuang loves playing basketball, billiards, swimming and playing the harmonica.

What made you choose KTH and your master’s programme?

After a Bachelor’s degree in the specialization of computer science, I decided to broaden, as well as to connect my knowledge and experience to another field. The master's programme in Network Services and Systems* at KTH offers such a seamless combination of both computer science and telecommunication.

Besides the reputation and academic level of KTH, the flexible schedule and course organisation are key factors.

What do you like most about your master’s programme?

Thanks to responsible teachers and their well-organised syllabus, emerging technologies have been continuously merged into the programme which keeps students “up-to-date”. Information and network engineering is a field of frequent updates of technologies.

What is your favourite course so far, and why?

My favourite course is ‘Building Networked Systems Security’, an add-on course of the ‘Networked Systems Security’ course. BNSS is a project-driven course, in which students are provided with equipment and network environment to simulate a secured company network architecture. The most amazing point is that you have the opportunity to not only apply knowledge from previous courses into practice but also use imagination constructively to design how your own network would be constructed.

During the project flow, I worked with three group members including one PhD student. Interdisciplinary backgrounds and skills (computer science, telecommunication, mobile application development) made it fascinating and rewarding. Together we finally came to a satisfying outcome - a secured networked system.

What are your impressions of Stockholm and Sweden?

Sweden is active, super active! Cutting-edge technologies, design and novel things in many fields remind you of the dedication to making the world better. Stockholm, as the capital of Sweden, is appealing with fascinating views and a cultural environment.

What is your best memory so far from your time at KTH?

Best memories are often sweet ones. I have been keeping in touch with local, international, as well as Chinese friends during my studies. Participating in activities and events together with all students of with diverse cultural backgrounds is incredibly cool. You meet, share, have fun and get to know each other. At KTH, this happens every day.

What do you think are the differences between studying at KTH and your home university?

Certainly, the academic level of a master’s programme is higher than a Bachelor’s one. It requires a deeper understanding of the topics and more sophisticated techniques. In my Bachelor’s study, a larger number of basic courses were given which act as prerequisites and support for more advanced courses today.

What would you like to say to students thinking of choosing KTH for master’s studies?

Pursuing high-tech and enjoying life are likely easier to be achieved at the same time here since KTH provides perfect support of both daily- and student life. I would definately recommend KTH based on my experience described above.
