Urooj
Urooj is a Pakistani from the United Arab Emirates and is studying the master’s programme in Molecular Science and Engineering at KTH. Before coming to Sweden, Urooj studied chemical engineering and worked for two years in an engineering consultancy in Dubai. In her free time, she loves swimming and exploring new cafes.

Why did you choose this master’s programme at KTH?
I chose the Molecular Science and Engineering programme at KTH because it offers a perfect blend of advanced chemistry, materials science, and practical applications. I was looking for a programme that not only deepens my theoretical knowledge but also challenges me to think like a researcher. KTH’s international reputation and strong research focus made it an easy decision. Plus, I was excited by the idea of studying in Sweden, which is home to innovation, sustainability, and a very unique student culture!
What are the best aspects of your programme?
One of the best parts of the programme is how theory is connected with practice. We don’t just learn about molecules; we get to work with them in labs and projects from the very beginning. The professors are approachable, and there’s a strong culture of collaboration among students. I also appreciate the flexibility to choose electives based on my interests. It gives me the freedom to shape my own academic path.
What are some of your favourite courses so far?
One of my favourite courses has been Mass Spectrometry. It was like solving a mystery, decoding molecular structures from raw data. It was challenging but very rewarding because it taught me how to interpret real data and understand molecular structures on a deeper level. It really helped me connect abstract theory to real analytical skills. That kind of course stays with you.
How is student life in Stockholm?
Stockholm is an amazing city for students. It’s clean, safe, full of green spaces, and has something for everyone, whether you love nature, nightlife, museums, or simply enjoying a quiet fika by the water. There's also a strong sense of community here, especially among international students. KTH supports student life well with plenty of events, student chapters, and student union activities. I’ve met people from all over the world, and it’s been such a culturally enriching experience.
What do you want to do after graduating?
After graduating, I would like to work in the cosmetics or pharmaceutical industry, ideally in research and development. I’m particularly interested in how molecular science can be used to create safer, more sustainable, and more effective products. Working in a field where science directly impacts people’s daily lives really excites me. I hope to be part of teams that innovate in formulation, quality testing, or product design. I also see myself contributing to more eco-conscious approaches within these industries in the long term.
What would you like to say to students thinking of choosing KTH for master’s studies?
If you're considering KTH, I would say go for it. You’ll be challenged, supported, and inspired in this place. The learning environment is both rigorous and flexible, which helps you grow in the direction you want. You’ll meet people from all over the world and gain a global perspective, both inside and outside the classroom. Stockholm is a great place to live, and KTH gives you the tools to make the most of your experience. It’s more than just a degree; it’s a journey.
