Lakshmi is from India. After working in testing and quality assurance, she decided to pursue her passion for sustainability through the Master’s in Sustainable Technology at KTH. She is especially drawn to the programme’s multidisciplinary approach and international environment. In her free time, she enjoys participating in student-led activities, like KTH Foodtech, and exploring new cultures.

Why did you choose this master’s programme at KTH?

I am an engineering graduate with a background in testing and quality assurance. My technical background and passion for sustainability inspired me to pursue a programme that offers both in-depth technical knowledge and a broad understanding of environmental issues. KTH’s Master’s in Sustainable Technology stood out because I like its well-rounded syllabus and multidisciplinary approach. The programme combines knowledge from different fields like engineering, management, and environmental science, allowing me to learn from and work with diverse perspectives.

What are some of your favourite courses so far?

I enjoy combining management and technical courses to gain a comprehensive understanding of sustainability. Some of my favourites include Environmental Management, which focuses on strategies and tools companies use to integrate environmental considerations into their operations; Cleaner Production, which covers techniques to reduce environmental impact through resource-efficient processes; Waste Management, where we explore sustainable systems for handling, reducing, and recycling waste; and Introduction to Industrial Ecology, which offers a systems-thinking approach to material and energy flows in both industrial and ecological contexts. These courses not only boost your understanding of sustainable systems but also help you get better at solving problems. One awesome thing about KTH is how flexible it is. You've got tons of electives to pick from, so you can customise your studies to match your interests and future plans.

How do studies at KTH differ from your previous studies?

Compared to my previous academic path, one of the biggest differences I have experienced is the emphasis on independent learning and critical thinking here. At KTH, we’re encouraged to innovate, explore real-world applications, and work on projects that require creativity and problem-solving. The teaching style here also feels more interactive, with a strong focus on group work, presentations, and case studies. It really helps build both technical and soft skills. Another big difference is the multidisciplinary approach. While my past studies were mainly tech-focused, at KTH I get to learn from a mix of engineering, environmental science, and management. Plus, the international vibe and getting to know different viewpoints make the whole experience even more fulfilling.

How would you describe your time at KTH so far?

My time at KTH so far has been both enriching and exciting! Academically, it’s been a great experience. I've had the chance to study subjects I’m truly passionate about and learn from professors who are experts in their fields. Beyond academics, I’ve enjoyed being part of a diverse and inclusive student community. You get to meet people from all over the world, which makes group projects, discussions, and even casual conversations really interesting and eye-opening.

There’s a great balance between independent learning and group work, and the support from teachers and student services is always there when needed. I’ve also gotten involved in student activities like KTH Foodtech and the “Connect with KTH student” project, which helped me grow both socially and professionally. Overall, it’s been a rewarding journey filled with learning, connections, and memorable experiences.

What would you like to say to students thinking of choosing KTH for master’s studies?

Grab the chance without a second thought: you’re in for an exciting and rewarding journey! KTH is one of the largest and most prestigious technical universities in Scandinavia. You’ll not only gain strong academic and practical experience, but also get to be part of a truly international environment. I really appreciate the diversity in the student community. Meeting people from all over the world helps you grow culturally and expand your perspective. It’s a great place to learn, connect, and build a solid foundation for your future.
