The master's programme gives me the opportunity to challenge myself and learn more about urbanism with a significant focus on sustainability practice.
Erasmus comes from sunny South Africa. He studied at the University of Natal in South Africa for his Bachelor’s and Master’s in Architecture and loves the different educational experience here in Sweden. He loves nature, running, cycling and exploring the beautiful city of Stockholm.
Why did you choose this master’s programme at KTH?
Having worked for several years as an architect, I realised over the years the social change of which I wanted to be a part whilst doing my initial studies. I could not achieve the smaller detail scale in architecture so decided to take the giant leap of studying again. The Sustainable Urban Planning and Design programme at KTH seemed like the perfect opportunity to challenge myself and learn more about urbanism with a significant focus on sustainability practice.
What are the best aspects of your programme?
Multidisciplinary and diverse group of students, giving you the opportunity to learn from unique experiences. Your peers are your greatest assets and KTH offers an amazing opportunity for such diversity in our programme.
Have you chosen a specialisation track within the programme? If Yes, which track and why?
I am currently on the Urban Design track. Having briefly worked on a few urban projects in my professional career, I wanted to further develop these skills and broaden my knowledge through the courses offered at KTH.
What are your favourite courses thus far?
The AD2867 Textures design course was particularly enjoyable with the well-structured group work, building and sharing knowledge to take into our final individual urban design project. Another favourite is AD2865 Introduction to Urban Economics, probably the most relevant of courses in the current state of global urbanisation that we need to question and unpack.
How do studies at KTH differ from your previous studies?
The focus on extensive group work for assignments has been the biggest shift. This allows for less pressure on the individual, and the opportunity to learn more from everyone’s unique background and experience.
How is student life in Stockholm?
The campus is situated in a great location, positioned between a vast natural landscape and the city – so you get the best of both worlds. Getting around Stockholm is really easy, and if you enjoy cycling, the cycling network is ideal for getting around quickly and taking in the beautiful sights.
How would you describe your time at KTH so far?
So far, so good! Having this different studying experience has been both challenging and enjoyable. Forming bonds with your classmates and facilitators/lecturers has made the experience special.
What do you want to do after graduating?
I hope to use the education to continue working as an architect and urban designer, in which there is a focus on consulting in sustainable practice within these fields. The opportunity to work at a municipal level would be something to potentially consider with a view to broadening my experience, as I have only worked in the private sector.
What would you like to say to students thinking of choosing KTH for their master’s studies?
I think KTH has a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. It is refreshing to gain a solid education whilst being able to learn about new cultural experiences, as well as have great access to the industry through activities on campus throughout the year and make friends in an international city. And I would recommend getting a bike. They are a cheap and efficient way of commuting and will make life in the city so much more enjoyable. Good luck and see you around!
