More about KTH research

High-quality doctoral education

KTH has approximately 1,900 doctoral students, a number equal to more than one-third of the country's capacity in the field of engineering and technology. The aim of doctoral education is to provide society with qualified and independent researchers.

An international environment

KTH provides an excellent international research environment where English is the primary working language. A large proportion of PhD-level enrolment is composed of international students. In fact, one objective of the KTH master's programmes is to recruit outstanding international students to PhD positions. After completing their doctoral education at KTH, many graduates go on to international careers.

Great working conditions

Doctoral students at KTH are normally employed by the university and receive a monthly salary. Being an employee means that you enjoy access to the Swedish social security system including, for instance, health care and parental-leave insurance. Moreover, with your academic supervisor, you will create an individual study plan to structure your studies and guide your progress, ensuring that studies are personalized for your interests and experience.

Student influence

The education and study environment at KTH is strongly influenced by the students, who are represented on all boards and in all committees where decisions are made about doctoral education. The student union, THS, has a PhD chapter  dedicated to continuous improvement of the quality of the doctoral education and working conditions for doctoral students.
