With the rapid growth of electric vehicles (EVs), the coupling between transportation systems and power systems has become increasingly significant. Wireless charging lanes (WCLs), which enable dynamic charging while driving, offer a promising solution but raise new challenges for infrastructure planning.
This master's thesis investigates the optimal deployment of WCLs in a coupled transportation–power system. A tri-level optimization framework is developed to capture the interactions among WCL planning, EV user behavior, and power distribution network operation. The original problem is reformulated into a tractable mixed-integer quadratically constrained programming (MIQCP) model and solved by Gurobi.
Case studies based on the Sioux Falls transportation network and the IEEE 33-bus system demonstrate that the proposed approach can effectively identify economically efficient deployment strategies. Results show that expanding the set of candidate locations increases overall benefits but exhibits diminishing marginal returns. Sensitivity analysis further highlights the significant impact of charging price and investment cost on deployment decisions.
