Applying for writing a master thesis at INDEK

This page contains information about when and how to apply for writing a master thesis at INDEK.

How and when to apply

We start a round of thesis projects at the beginning of the spring semester and a round at the beginning of the fall semester. It is not possible to start at any other time. If you want to write your thesis during the spring semester, you must submit an application to INDEK in the end of November. If you want to write your thesis during the fall semester, you must submit an application to INDEK in the beginning of June.

The application is made in a special web form i.e. not through antagning.se. A so-called thesis proposal, a description of the planned thesis project, is attached to the application. Exact dates, as well as the link to the web form, are published well in advance of each deadline.

We offer the opportunity to write a master thesis at INDEK for all students of the master program in Industrial engineering and management (CINEK/TIEMM), all students of the master program in Industrial management (TINEM), and all students of the master program in Technology-based Entrepreneurship (TTBEM).

  • Most students who study a five-year degree program at KTH shall apply for the course ME211X .

  • Most students who only study a master program at KTH shall apply for the course ME210X .

  • Older students may instead choose ME200X .

See the course plans under the links above for information about eligibility, i.e. the specific prerequisites for each course. Please note that if you are not eligible at the start of each course, you will not be accepted as master thesis student. Please contact your study councilor for information about how to apply for an exemption.

Please contact us if you study another degree or master program at KTH. We might be able to offer you the opportunity to write your thesis at INDEK.

A master thesis project at INDEK may be initiated in three different ways

  1. You apply with a thesis proposal that you have formulated in collaboration with an external organization, e.g. a company. The thesis is commissioned by this external organization. This is the most common type of thesis project at INDEK and that is what we recommend.

  2. You apply with a thesis proposal that has been initiated by a researcher at INDEK. We have the ambition to formulate and announce a number of proposals for such research-related thesis projects that you can apply for before each semester.

  3. You apply with your own thesis proposal in one of the subject areas listed above. In this case, we recommend that you contact one of INDEK's researchers who is active in the chosen area to discuss the problem formulation and focus of the thesis.

In the application form, you need to select within which subject area or areas you want to write your thesis. If you select any of the aspects 11-13, you must also select at least one of the subject areas 1-10. If you are applying for a thesis project that is commissioned by a company (the first category in the list above), you must therefore classify your planned thesis in one or more of the areas 1-13 yourself.

After the application deadline, we check your eligibility. In this process, we wait for the results from exam period 2 and the re-exam period in August respectively. If you are eligible to start writing your master thesis, you will be signed up and course registered on one of our thesis courses. As soon as possible (usually in January and August respectively), we will appoint a supervisor and an examiner for your thesis work.
