Rieffel’s theory of compact quantum metric spaces provides an elegant, non-commutative generalisation of the classical theory of compact metric spaces. In my talk, I will provide a (hopefully) gentle introduction to these objects and their basic properties. I will then touch upon some recent results (obtained in joint works with Konrad Aguilar, Thomas Gotfredsen and Jens Kaad), which show how the q-deformed 2-sphere and 3-sphere fit naturally into this framework.
