Abstract

The main theme of this paper is the evolute. That is, a curve generated by all of the centers of curvature of a given plane curve. In order to understand this, terms as center of curvature and curvature itself are explained. The concept of curvature will be approached from different angles. First by having arc length as paramter and later by using circumscribed circles.

After these necessary definitions and basic concepts the evolute will be defined together with some of its properties, even the involute will be presented. As the cherry on top, the evolute will in fact be used to draw different curves and patterns, which is mostly just a treat for the eye.
The primary goal is to communicate all this in a way that is both comprehensible and interesting for someone who’s been studying mathematics at university for about a year.
