PhD course: Introduction to operator algebras

Time: Thu 2020-01-23 15.15 - 18.00

Lecturer: Sven Raum

Location: Kräftriket, house 5, room 31

Abstract

Algebras of operators on a Hilbert space provide a useful setup to approach questions from a varieties of subjects, such as classical operator theory, complex analysis, topology, measure theory or group theory. The principal aim of this course is to provide the participants with the basic knowledge and and intuition on operator algebras in order to consult literature that uses operator algebraic language on topics which are of relevance to their research.

During the first course session, we will start by introducing operator algebras, discuss the motivation to study them and the relation with other fields of maths. The main part of the first meeting, we will discuss some instructive examples of operator algebras.

Lecture: 15:15 - 17:00 and Exercises: 17:15 - 18:00.
