# Robert Altmann: A semi-explicit discretization scheme for elliptic-parabolic problems

**Abstract:**

Coupled systems of elliptic and parabolic type appear, for instance, in the field of geomechanics but also in medical applications such as the investigation of cerebral edema. We propose a semi-explicit time discretization scheme which decouples the system and thus, improves the computational efficiency without decreasing the convergence rates.

The convergence proof is based on an alternative interpretation of the scheme, namely as an implicit method applied to a system with delay term. Here, the delay time equals the used step size. This connection also allows a deeper understanding of the coupling and leads to an explicit condition on the system parameters.
