Abstract: In this essay the Pythagorean Theorem and its consequences for mathematics and physics are discussed. The Pythagorean Theorem has a 4000-year long history, and it has caught the interest of many mathematicians during the centuries. There are over 370 proofs of the Pythagorean Theorem. In the first part of the essay three of these proofs are presented, and it is discussed which of these proofs could be considered the best and most beautiful one. In the second part of the essay a couple of the theorem’s consequences for mathematics and physics are presented. The focus is on four areas: trigonometry, the spiral of Theodorus, calculation of impedance and the theory of special relativity. In all four of these areas the Pythagorean Theorem has played a central role.
