Abstract: to any rational selfmap of an algebraic variety is associated a fundamental dynamical invariant, the (first) dynamical degree, measuring the algebraic complexity of the dynamics. In most examples when it can be computed, it tends to be an algebraic number. I will present joint work with Bell, Diller, and Krieger, in which we produce examples of rational maps with dynamical degrees that are transcendental numbers.
