Aims and activities

NIES's planned activities break down roughly into the following categories:

An annual international symposium / conference

Typically the annual conference will be organized over 2-3 days and will showcase work by NIES member researchers and other internationally prominent researchers around a given theme, which varies from year to year. The annual conferences will rotate among the Nordic anchoring institutions, with the first conference taking place in Denmark in 2011, to be followed in successive years by conferences in Norway, Sweden and Finland. Each annual symposium/conference will result in a peer-reviewed volume of research papers to be published by Rodopi in the series Studies in the Environmental Humanities.

One-day colloquia / workshops multiple times per year

Workshops will rotate among the three other anchoring institutions in Sweden (KTH & Uppsala University), Denmark (SDU--Odense), Norway (Oslo University) or Finland (University of Turku). Typically the anchoring institution that is responsible for organizing the annual NIES symposium in a given academic year will not also have the responsibility of organizing a one-day workshop in the same year. Each event will have its own thematic focus.

Field research trips, research collaboration visits and/or intensive doctoral co-supervision visits

Such visits for NIES members or their research students may be facilitated by NIES on a case-by-case basis following review of proposals by the network leadership. As these activities are contingent on available funds, a call for applications will be issued on the NIES website when sufficient funds are available for these purposes. Review of these applications will take place at the annual meeting of the NIES leadership in the fall.
