Norwegian scholars of environmental studies are spread across a number different disciplines and a large geographic area. With the exception of the Center for Environment and Development (SUM) at the University of Oslo, interdisciplinary centers devoted to environmental studies are rare, which makes NIES in general and our Norwegian sub-group in particular highly relevant as means of fostering innovation in the relevant fields in both Norwegian and pan-Nordic academe. The existence of SUM at the University of Oslo is one of the reasons the university was chosen by NIES's founders to be the network's first (of four) anchoring institution in the Nordic countries. Research fields represented in this group include: Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning, Cultural History, Landscape Studies, Human Geography, Urban Studies, American Studies, History of Ideas, History, Literary Studies, American Studies, Scandinavian Literature, Literacy Education, Linguistics, British Studies, Cultural Studies, Environmental Ethics, Religious Studies, Religion & the Environment Studies, Literature and the Environment Studies.
